In the 1970s in the United States, conceptual artist Dennis Oppenheim created a series of puppet installations that, periodically and through a system of motors, struck bells with their heads. This series was titled "Attempt to Raise Hell."
My project, titled "First Attempt to Create Chaos," originates from the use of the bell as an archetype present in various cultures around the world, and from the fascination it generated in me as an artist and art historian in visual terms.
The attraction I feel towards bells has been the driving force behind this project, and it is a sentiment that endures to this day. In fact, bells have played highly versatile roles since their inception, such as measuring time in Medieval Christian Europe, synchronizing energetic vibrations in the Buddhist world, emitting warning sounds, among many others. However, my interest is not limited to their functional history; it is particularly focused on their visuality and on how the bell, as an image, has been perceived throughout the history of art. In the words of Aby Warburg, I intend to conduct a scientific study of the use of its image.
